York - Selby Cycle Way

Copmanthorpe - Sun - Pluto - Copmanthorpe

The York to Selby Cycle way passes within a couple of miles of Copmanthorpe. The path south from York is now the site of the Cycle the Solar System project.

To get to the Cycle way leave the village centre on Church Lane and Low Green. Go through to and up Merchant Way. At Top Lane go right, down to the traffic lights and cross when safe.

Take the Cycle way along the side of the golf course in the direction of York. As you approach the junction of Tadcaster Road and Simbauk Lane (near the college) take a left turn through a small entrance and down a circling path. Pass under the two bridges. Continue on and you will reach the Sun.

At this point you join the main part of the York - Selby Cycle Way, a major route in the National Cycle Network. The turning to the left takes the path north into the centre of York, via the Knavesmire and the River Ouse.

The Sun is the start of the the Cycle The Solar System project. This is a scale model of the Solar System that stretches over 6 miles to Pluto (in Rical) at the far end of the route. If you haven't been to see it yet, you're missing out. At a scale of around 570,000,000 to 1, it gives you a very different prospective on where we live. To find out more head to the Cycle the Solar System web site.

The York-Selby way is a good place for recreational cycling. A safe, traffic free route suitable for all ages and cyclists. The path is very easy to follow so no directions are necessary. Each planet has a detailed information plaque and a sign giving the distance to the next planet along, so you can decided if you want to continue or turn back.

This is basically an out and back ride, but you can make a variation on the return journey. Just after you return over the Ouse bridge there is a path that branches off to the right. It takes you down to the Bishopthorpe to Acaster Malbis road. Go left when you join the road (under the cycle path bridge) and in less than a mile you will be at the Ship Inn in Acaster. Continuing, take a right at the next two T junctions and after a couple of sharp bends you will reach Acaster Crossroads. Take care here, but go straight across and on to Copmanthorpe. Once back in the village turn right on to Main Street to get you back to the village centre.
